Research Profile

The Chair’s work is guided by the three fundamental dimensions of the political sphere and spans their entire breadth with the courses that are taught and with the staff’s research activities. Summarised under the term ‘polity’, institutions and structures such as the Bundestag, Bundesrat and federalism are examined. When looking at ‘politics’, political processes such as the aggregation of interests, voting procedures and lobbyism are analysed whilst the term ‘policy’-analysis means the study of certain policy areas such as social and educational policy. Transforming social and international contexts are redirecting the focus of research from the mere functional inter-relations of legislative, executive and judicial organs towards the increasing challenges of globalisation, Europeanisation and multi-level governance. But the Chair’s research does not only look at empirical questions, but also at fundamental theoretical puzzles, e.g.: In the context of quickly changing circumstances, what are the benefits of political systems? From where do these systems draw their legitimacy? What might be current and future challenges to their maintenance? Methodologically, the work of the Chair’s staff is guided by a pluralism of methods which advocates the use of quantitative and qualitative methods as well as mixed-method approaches.
