Research Profile
The Mostar bridge – destroyed and rebuilt after the war that tore apart the former Yugoslavia – became a symbol not only for the return of war, destruction, and displacement of peoples after the end of the Cold War, but also for the struggle for a new beginning, inclusion, and unity. Based on considerable research on conflict in former Yugoslavia, this Department aims to build bridges across various divides:
-
- Across disciplinary boundaries, including history, psychology, regional studies, sociology, and international law;
- Across the borders within our discipline by connecting theory-guided, methodologically sound research and teaching with in-depth empirical analysis;
- Across the borders of our country by internationalizing teaching and research;
- Across the borders of academia by seeking a mutually beneficial and inspiring dialogue with politics and society.
Our core research areas lie in peace and conflict studies as well as in research on international organizations and regimes, in particular with respect to their interrelatedness. Regionally speaking, our focus is on Eastern Europe. We focus on inter-organizational cooperation, security governance in Europe, secession and ethnic conflicts, prevention and mediation, post-Soviet transformation, German and American foreign policy, as well as shifting power in both the Middle East and East Asia. In our teaching, we try to cover the entire spectrum of international politics, which also includes transatlantic relations, the EU’s foreign and security policy, development policy, and international political economy.
The chair’s motto reflects our dedication to innovation and is derived from the American inventor Alexander Graham Bell:
“Not always follow the path laid down, it leads where others have already gone.” |
